HOW MANY LOGS ARE THERE IN A BAG & HOW LONG WOULD A BAG LAST?
On Average there are between 9 to 12 logs in a bag, there are lot of factors when it comes to how long a bag will last, but 1 bag should last you an evening or 2, usually longer depending how hot you like it! In the vented Bulk Bags there is approx 100 logs and again it is very difficult to estimate how long a bag will last, but on average we would say between 2-4 weeks.
WHAT SIZE ARE THE LOGS IN LENGTH, DIAMITER ETC?
Logs in our bags are approx 9" long and are split into managable pieces. We cut logs in our loads to whatever size stove/open fire the customer has i.e between 9"-20" and again they are split into managable pieces
WHAT PERCENTAGE IS THE MIXED LOAD?
The approx percentage of the mixed loads are 70/30 - 70% softwood 30% hardwood
WHAT SPECIES ARE THE WOOD?
Our Hardwoods are generally Ash, Beech, Sycamore
and Oak, however we do sometimes have Chestnut,
Elm, Popular and Birch. Our Softwood species are generally spruce, douglas fir, western hemlock and larch.
HOW SHOULD I LIGHT MY FIRE?
Knowing how to prepare, lay and light a fire is very important, you can’t just pile it all together and hope for the best! It is always necessary to take the time to prepare your fire before you strike the match!
Start with newspaper, crumple several pieces and put into the middle of your stove/open fire, place small pieces of kindling (make sure they are very dry) on top of the paper, you can use firelighters if you like but you shouldn’t need to if you are using quality kindling. Set fire to the newspaper, once the kindling is well alight gently place on larger pieces of wood/kindling preferably softwood, when the fire is going nicely and all the bits of wood are alight place on some larger pieces of wood. Now sit back and enjoy!
DOES THE WOOD SMOKE?
The wood will probably smoke a little when first lit, but when the heat builds in your stove and the fire gets going the wood should be more or less smokeless.
DOES WOOD SPARK?
All firewood can spark, that is why South West Forestry recommends that you be vigilant when opening your stove door and always place a fireguard in front of your open fire whenever you leave the room.
WHAT DELIVERY VEHICLE IS USED TO DELIVER MY
WOOD?
At the moment we use a Volkswagen Transporter
Tipper.
CAN I SPECIFY A TIME?
Usually we can deliver late morning or afternoon,
however if a specific time is required just let
us know and we will do all we can to meet it.
HOW MUCH NOTICE DO I NEED TO GIVE FOR A DELIVERY?
During the summer we are usually quieter therefore
usually we can deliver your order with in a couple
of days.
During the winter however the earlier you order
the better due to the high demand for firewood
during he colder months! There can sometimes be
a wait of up to 3-4 weeks during this period,
however we are hoping to reduce this waiting time
by using more vehicles and employing more people
during the winter months.
HOW CAN I PAY FOR MY WOOD ETC?
Cheque or cash at the moment, we are looking
into payment by card, but the fees are quite high
and we would need to charge a small fee to cover
this, however more and more customers are asking
for this service, so we will probably be introducing
card facilities in the near future.
DOES THE PRICE INCLUDE VAT?
All prices include VAT unless otherwise stated.
WILL I RECEIVE AN INVOICE AND OR A RECEIPT?
An invoice or receipt is not usually supplied,
however if you require one please let us no and
we will be more than happy to supply you with
one.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR WASTE?
Any waste we do have we try and recycle as much
as we can. Sawdust is used for animal bedding
by ourselves and our customers, chips of wood
left over on the yard floor is picked up and used
for kindling by ourselves and our neighbours!
Wood off cuts i.e. pieces that are too small to
be sold as logs, are either used by ourselves
or bagged up for use in very small stoves, bbq’s,
chimneys etc. Any other natural waist is composted.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BURNING WOOD?
We all use energy to heat and fuel our homes,
and can all therefore benefit from woodfuel.
Some of the advantages of burning woodfuel are:
-
Woodfuel when burnt efficiently produces
virtually no smoke and is carbon neutral,
thus it does not add to greenhouse gases which
are associated with global warming.
-
Given rising prices of fossil fuels, switching
to woodfuel can actually reduce bills!
-
Managed forests and woodlands provide a renewable
source of energy
-
Using woodfuel contributes to the UK renewable
energy targets
-
Woodfuel businesses create and sustain rural
jobs
